The front is pieced together from squares of different tweed weaves. Herringbone sits next to houndstooth, which sits next to a fine check, all inside one panel. A notched lapel and a five-button front give it the shape of a proper tailored piece rather than a plain vest. It is structured through the chest and waist, so it holds a clean line under a coat. There is a welt pocket at the chest and two flap pockets lower down. The back is smooth and neatly finished, which matters when the jacket comes off.
